As of late 2022, our 2.4 GHz wireless controllers will begin carrying V2 branding. This is to differentiate them from the previous versions (now called V1) and avoid confusion. Due to a lack of IC chips, we were unable to continue producing V1 controllers and we were forced to update our controllers going forward. With global issues affecting manufacturing, it was necessary for us to do this in order to avoid raising prices and deal with constant delays.
What is different with V2?
The previously available 2.4 GHz wireless controllers (SEGA® branded, Legacy16, and Tribute64) are not compatible with any V2 controllers, receivers, or firmware updates. These controllers (now referred to as V1) will continue to receive support such as firmware updates (when possible) and customer service but will no longer be produced. We want to provide parity between both versions but some features may not be able to be replicated on the V1 controllers.
What are the improvements?
All newly produced V2 controllers will arrive with the latest firmware updates V1 provided as well as some minor upgrades such as new macros for button mappings as well as slightly improved latency. Additionally, previous minor issues are resolved thanks to the more powerful V2 IC Chip.
How will we know if it is a V2 controller?
- Packaging - There will be a V2 marking imprinted next to the name of the controller on the packaging if it has an existing V1 model (i.e. BIG6 will not display V2 but will be V2)
- Receivers - All V2 receivers will have a "V2" mark on them while V1 receivers have no marking on them
- Manuals - In most cases, there will also be V2 branding on the manual itself to differentiate it from previous releases
Can I upgrade/update my V1 to V2?
Unfortunately, this is impossible. The IC chip is on the board itself and no kind of firmware update would be able to bring a V1 controller/receiver in line with V2 versions. Attempting to update a V1 device with V2 firmware will cause it to fail entirely and it is not recommended. Likewise, V2 devices are not compatible with V1 firmware. If you have any problems installing any firmware update, contact our support team via info@retro-bit.com.
Will there be V2 firmware updates?
Should there be a need for fixes and updates, we will do our best to address them via firmware updates as needed. You can view all firmware updates and manuals via our support page.
