AFTER 30 YEARS, A GHOST FROM THE PAST RETURNS!

Avenging Spirit, also known as Phantasm in Japan, made its debut in arcades in 1991 and found modest success despite being an action-platformer arcade game.  It would skip all the home consoles and arrive on the Game Boy® a year later with a limited physical release in the West.  Those lucky enough to play it recognized its exciting game mechanic - possessing your enemies!  How you proceed depends on who or what you possess and control, be it a gun-toting gangster, a floating guru, a vampire, or a robot.  A young man's life was taken away by gangsters while attempting to protect his girlfriend, who was subsequently kidnapped.  With the help of her father, this little ghost must end their plans and rescue his love, Gennifer!

1991

Jaleco originally launched as Phantasm in Japan, the arcade cabinet also made its way to North America as Avenging Spirit.  It stood out among other arcade titles with its deep and challenging gameplay.

1992

The following year, there were expectations of Jaleco to explore console ports.  In November, Phantasm launched for the Japanese Game Boy® while December saw it hit the West as Avenging Spirit.  In North America, the game's box art drew criticism with its depiction of a mobster giving almost no indication of the quirky ghost possession gameplay.  As such, many judged the game by its cover and would pass on it.

October 2022

Retro-Bit Publishing releases Avenging Spirit on the Game Boy.  This version includes a couple of screens that were removed when it was brought to the West.  Pre-orders had ended in June 2022.

  • The licensing has been updated to reflect this release.
  • All box art and labeling has been updated to the Japanese and PAL releases.
  • A screen displaying how to enable Hard Mode upon completing the game has been restored and translated.  Additionally, a victory screen during the "good ending" was also restored.
