February 1988
Ultimate Play the Game was a studio that had mainly focused on developing games on the ZX Spectrum throughout the early 1980s, developing titles like Solar Jetman, Knight Lore, Sabre Wulf, and more. After changing the company name to Rare Ltd., they set to work on releasing games on the NES® console. One project was initially named Pro-Am Racing and eventually became R.C. Pro-Am. It was released in North America in February 1988 and in Europe a few months later, in April. The game was an absolute hit, selling over 2 million copies worldwide, and it cemented Rare Ltd. as a major studio. It also made its way on Nintendo's PlayChoice-10 arcades, and its simple controls would prove to be a powerful advertisement to get families to purchase the console and/or the game.

June 1991
Super R.C. Pro-Am was released on the Game Boy® and took the original's gameplay and shrunk it down to size. The game packed 24 tracks onto the portable screen and even allowed for up to 4 players to connect via the Link Cable or Four Player Adapter. It received a European release in April 1992 and a re-release in 1998 as part of Nintendo's Player's Choice series of reprints. It sold over a million copies.
1992
A version of R.C. Pro-Am was released on the SEGA Genesis® with upgraded graphics and music that take advantage of the 16-bit console as well as additional features. Championship Pro-Am came with some gameplay changes, such as collecting letters that spell out "CHAMPION" instead of "NINTENDO", racing against 5 CPU opponents instead of 3, and each course having a lap record players can beat to earn additional points.

December 1992
Despite the release of the Super NES® the previous year, Rare Ltd. was hard at work on a slew of games with Battletoads and Pirates!, both released in 1991. In between working on more Battletoads games, they would release Championship Pro-Am on the SEGA Genesis® and PAL Mega Drive as well as develop the true sequel to their hit NES® racer. R.C. Pro-Am II launched on the NES® with many improvements over the original. There are more environments, vehicle upgrades, bonus rounds, and intense 4-player gameplay. It would also be released on the PAL NES® in September 1993.
August 2015
Rare Ltd. had a long-time partnership with Nintendo end once Microsoft purchased them in 2002. Now a first party developer for the Xbox consoles, Rare would continue to develop and release games. In 2015, Rare would launch Rare Replay, a compilation of 30 games spread across its 30 year history as both Rare Ltd. and Ultimate Play the Game. It launched for the Xbox One and each title would arrive with minimal edits but also added cheats, snapshots, and even unlockable behind-the-scenes footage and interviews regarding unreleased games. On this compilation, Rare included both R.C. Pro-Am and R.C. Pro-Am II.
