Enter the twisted world of a D Movie and save the girl!

Released in 1992 by Riot and Telenet Japan on the Super Famicom, Psycho Dream puts players into a world where D Movies are a way to escape reality.  But when that dream world is far too enticing to leave, you become a "sinker," and your body in the real world will atrophy away.  Yūki Sayaka is one girl who is trapped and needs to be rescued by the "Diamond Dogs", debuggers who can travel into these dream worlds and bring back the consciousness of their targets.  It is up to agents Ryō Shijima and Maria Tobari to enter this corrupted nightmare and traverse through six tracks.  This game was never physically released outside of Japan, despite a prototype being teased in gaming magazines under the title of Dream Probe.

December 1992

Telenet Japan's subsidiary Riot released Psycho Dream for the Super Famicom.  The game is an action-platformer with six stages and provides very little story within the game.  Instead, the story is told through the instruction manual that includes artwork by Nishizaki Marino, an anime and manga artist who had previously worked for Gainax Co.  Famitsu and other Japanese reviewers gave it mediocre scores initially, although it later received praise.

September 1993

Telenet Japan made plans to bring Psycho Dream and several other titles to North America.  Now retitled to Dream Probe, it was in the process of being ported to the SNES® but was canceled alongside other titles.  This was due to SEGA of America's purchase of Renovation Products (Telenet's US publisher).  Other canceled games from this purchase include Arcus Odyssey (SNES) and The Journey Home: Quest for the Throne (SNES).  It also ended any possibility of a European release.

February 2021

Psycho Dream was added to the SNES collection on the Nintendo Classics app for the Nintendo Switch.  This version is untranslated and also does not include the manual, which contains the vast majority of the backstory.  Ratalaika Games released a standalone version for eShops on modern consoles that uses an English translation in September 2025.

April 2026

Retro-Bit Publishing launched open pre-orders for the collector's edition of Psycho Dream for NTSC-U and PAL SNES® consoles through May 24th.  It is estimated that all units will be delivered to their respective retailers by September 2026.
