Save the world from eternal darkness in this Wolf Team classic!

The long-storied legacy of Wolf Team, who would eventually go on to develop the Tales series, had its origins in the arcades and home PCs from where they began the Arcus series on the MSX.  As a first-person RPG, its success would lead to the sequels Arcus II: Silent Symphony and Arcus III.  Before the third entry, two spinoffs would emerge.  The first was a parody game for the PC-88, and the other was Arcus Odyssey, the series's first home console entry.  This isometric action RPG lets you and a friend adventure together to save the land of Arcus from the evil Castomira, who has returned after a thousand years.  Sharpen your blade and prepare your spells for eight stages that will take you from ruined temples, mystic caverns, and treacherous landscapes until you can face off against the dark sorceress herself!

Arcus Odyssey - Collector's Edition

Arcus Odyssey_Artboard 1
A thousand years ago, the dark sorceress Castomira sought to destroy the land of Arcus and turn it into chaos and darkness.  It was Princess Leaty, herself a sorceress of light and granddaughter to the legendary King of Light, who was able to defeat and banish her.  Foreseeing her possible return, the princess created a sword, later named “the Power of Leaty”, and entrusted the King of Arcus with its safekeeping.  Now with Castomira’s return, it falls upon four brave heroes to bring peace: Jeddah the swordsman, Erin the warrior maiden, Diana the elven archer, and Bead the dark mage.  Grab your controller and adventure alone or with a partner through 8 action-packed stages.

Developed by Wolf Team, Arcus is a first-person RPG in which you navigate Jeddah by selecting a location from a menu.  Released in Japan on the MSX, it features turn-based combat with attacks and spells as you quest to restore peace by exploring towns and dungeons.  For its time, it was closer to Western-style RPGs and even borrows terminology from Dungeons and Dragons.

October 1989

It's been ten years since Jeddah saved the world with the Golden Dragon.  The half-elf Picto finds the legendary Rune Blade, which leads him on a new quest.  But doing so has also drawn out a new terrible evil.  Arcus II: Silent Symphony also switched to an overhead viewpoint, similar to JRPGs.  Even though it has the usual RPG structure with parties, turn-based combat, menu navigation, and lands to explore, it also deviates by not rewarding experience or leveling up players.  You also cannot equip new gear or weapons, and you may only purchase healing items.

December 1989

Arcus: Beyond the Age of the Mirage (あーくしゅ 陽炎の時代を越えて) is loosely based on the mainline series and serves as a parody entry with plenty of references to other games, movies, comics, and other media.  The story features both Jeddah and Pict in their quest to find a mystical sword and CDs to restore the world.  Throughout their journey, there are cameos and appearances by other Wolf Team and Telenet Japan characters from the Valis series, Final Zone, and more.

June 1991

Hack and slash your way through the lands of Arcus in your quest to prevent the evil sorceress Castomira from plunging it all into darkness.  In Arcus Odyssey, you choose from four heroes to venture out into various environments and dungeons to put an end to the chaos.  It would be released for the SEGA Genesis® in October 1991, marking the first time the series would be exposed to the West.

October 1991

Releasing months after Arcus Odyssey, Arcus III  returns to the Western-style first-person RPG from the first game.  Twelve years have passed since Pict defeated the evil demon.  But now a new evil has attacked the capital city.  Everything seems to point to Vido, a powerful sorcerer.  It is up to Pict to unite all the races to preserve peace across the lands.  It was only released for the PC-98 series of home computers in Japan.

July 1993

Arcus I・II・III is a remake of the three mainline entries with improvements that make use of the Mega CD's capabilities.  Each title is now presented as a chapter of the overarching story, with most changes affecting the second entry, now using the first-person perspective like the other two games.  There are additional animated cutscenes, voiced dialogue, and higher-quality music.  It was only released in Japan.

October 1993

Telenet Japan began publishing titles for the Super Famicom and ported Arcus Odyssey to the Super Famicom under the title Arcus Spirits.  This version of the game was almost the same as the Mega Drive version, offering no improvements despite the game being more than two years old.

Late 1993- Early 1994

During the development of Arcus Spirits, Telenet Japan sought to bring the game to the Super Nintendo, utilizing their North American publishing arm, Renovation Games.  Despite the game being near completion and even reviewed by several publications, it never materialized.  This was due to SEGA of America purchasing Renovation Games outright from Telenet, leading to the cancellation of various releases already in progress.  This included The Journey Home: Quest for the Throne, Dream Probe, and Arcus Odyssey (SNES).

April 2026

Retro-Bit Publishing launched open pre-orders for the collector's edition of Arcus Odyssey for NTSC-U and PAL SEGA Genesis®/Mega Drive consoles through May 24th.  It is estimated that all units will be delivered to their respective retailers by September 2026.
  • The licensing has been updated to reflect this release.
  • This version of the game is compatible with original SEGA Genesis®/Mega Drive consoles (NTSC and PAL) as well as most 3rd party consoles.
