April 1987

Developed by Technōs Japan and led by Yoshihisa Kishimoto, Double Dragon (ダブルドラゴン) was a spiritual successor to Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun (aka Renegade).  Besides being a side-scrolling beat ‘em up, it also introduced two-player cooperative gameplay and the ability to pick up weapons dropped by enemies.  Unnamed in the original Japanese arcade, the twin brothers were named Hammer and Spike once the arcade arrived in the West.  This would then be corrected to Billy Lee and Jimmy Lee once ported to home consoles.  As the heirs to the martial art Sou-setsu-ken, they set out to defeat the Black Warriors gang to rescue Marian, Billy’s girlfriend.  It proved to be a massive success, spawning multiple sequels and giving Technōs Japan another iconic franchise.  The NES version was a launch title for the Nintendo Classics service in 2018.

November 1988

Released a year after the success of the first entry, Double Dragon II: The Revenge (ダブルドラゴンII ザ・リベンジ) begins with Marian getting shot by the Black Warrior’s leader, causing the Lee brothers to seek revenge for the murder.  While maintaining most of the original title’s gameplay, one major change was changing the Punch and Kick buttons to act as Left and Right attacks, similar to Renegade.  Several new attacks were added, such as the iconic Hurricane Kick.  The NES version was re-released on the Nintendo Classics service in 2019.

Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons was released in April 2013 on XBLA, which was a mashup of the arcade and NES versions.  It did not review well and is regarded as one of the worst titles overall.

November 1990

Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone (ダブルドラゴン3 ザ・ロゼッタストーン) was released two years after the last entry, with the title being changed to Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones when it was released to Western home consoles.  After training abroad for two years, the brothers encounter a fortune teller who informs them that to challenge the world’s strongest, they must seek out the Rosetta Stones that are scattered throughout the world.  This adventure takes players through the United States, China, Japan, Italy, and Egypt.

This entry into the series was not developed internally by Technōs Japan, but instead by East Technology, and was released first in the United States with cabinets accommodating up to three players, allowing gamers to play as Billy, Jimmy, and Sonny Lee - a new brother.  The game returned to the controls from the first game and introduced iconic attacks such as the hip-throw, knee drop, back-to-back Hurricane Kick, dual jump kick, and the headbutt.  The North American arcade also had the distinction of allowing players to use an item shop at the start of each stage to purchase additional weapons and power-ups with credits, an early instance of microtransactions.  The item shop was removed from the Japanese version, the difficulty was adjusted to be easier, and three additional fighters were added to the character selection.

June 1991

The founders of Rare, Tim and Chris Stamper, developed Battletoads in response to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze of the early 1990s.  Rare would further put their own spin on the beat ‘em up genre by adding racing and shooting stages as well as exaggerated finishers.  The Battletoads and Professor T. Bird were escorting Princess Angelica on their spacecraft to meet her father.  One of the ‘Toads, Pimple, joins her on a leisurely trip during the voyage when the Dark Queen’s ship kidnaps them.  Thanks to Pimple’s distress call, the rest of the ‘Toads are up to the task of rescuing the pair.

The game was a technical marvel, with Rare once again demonstrating mastery of the NES and its capabilities, even as 16-bit consoles were just around the corner.  It garnered widespread acclaim from players and critics and would prove to be one of gaming’s most iconic franchises to date.  It was re-released on the Nintendo Classics service in 2025.

October 1992

Releasing only on home consoles, Super Double Dragon (Return of Double Dragon in Japan) was developed under a tight timeline, with planned story elements missing entirely from the final version with the initial release.  In this new adventure, the Lee twins must fight the Shadow Warriors gang to rescue Marian, now a police investigator.  New to the series are a Dragon Power Gauge and the ability to guard.  The Japanese version changes the music and many other elements within the game.  Billy and Jimmy now have different strengths that differentiate them, enemy and item placement is slightly different, the difficulty was tweaked, and enemies will attempt to dodge certain attacks.  A reworked Japanese version was re-released in 2018, although the cartridge will only work on third-party consoles.  Both the original and updated versions were then re-released by Arc System Works in 2023 on modern consoles as a single release.

June 1993

Coming off their successful release of Battletoads, the same team at Rare would be tasked with a project that would eventually become Battletoads Double Dragon (sometimes listed as Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team).  The team received very little input from Technōs Japan during development.  It launched on the NES® in June with ports arriving on the SEGA Genesis®, SNES®, and Game Boy® later that year as well as in other regions.  The NES® was quite the technical marvel as it used the original Battletoads engine with some modifications and was released near the end of the console's lifespan.  All of the ports received glowing reviews and have appeared on top game lists.  That's despite another Rare title releasing around the same time...

June 1993 again...

Releasing at the same time as their Ultimate Team, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs launched for the SNES® and SEGA® Master System.  During a demonstration of a virtual reality system by the Psicone Corporation, a pig monster kidnaps the CEO’s daughter along with Zitz and others.  This elaborate setup is by none other than the Dark Queen herself, so it is up to the other two ‘Toads to mount a rescue mission.  Further ports were planned but canceled, although Tec Toy did release one for the Mega Drive in Brazil, which was an incomplete version that would often freeze or crash.  The SNES® version was re-released on the Nintendo Classics service in 2024.

August 1994

In a first for the series, this entry is a fighting game that is mostly based on the Double Dragon animated series.  In Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, of the twelve playable characters, four are completely new, having been created for this game only.  It features the typical 8-way direction input along with six action buttons.  While the graphics were good, the gameplay and lack of challenge held it back.  A version was also released for the Atari Jaguar, which suffered from poor controls

December 1994

Battletoads, also known as Battletoads Arcade or Super Battletoads, was an instance of Rare taking greater liberties, as this was published by Electronic Arts rather than Nintendo.  This allowed the team to utilize a larger amount of gore and violence.  Additionally, the game allowed for all three ‘Toads to be controlled, and the differences between them became much more pronounced.  Rash was the quick fighter, Pimple was the heavy hitter, and Zitz was the balanced one.  The arcade was a failure and caused other projects to be canceled, including a version for the Game Boy, which was tested and completed.  This was the last original Battletoads game for 26 years.

February 1995

Double Dragon, nowadays referred to as Double Dragon ‘95, was another fighting game, this time based on the Double Dragon live-action film that was released in 1994.  The game was released on arcades, Neo Geo, Neo Geo CD, and PlayStation, and has the distinction of being the final Double Dragon game that Technōs Japan developed before going out of business.  Despite the cast of 12 fighters, only half of them actually appeared in the film, with most of the others being original characters.  Despite the challenges, the game reviewed well and was an accessible fighting game that people could enjoy.

September 2012

Double Dragon Neon was a reboot of the original game that was developed by WayForward, and featured ‘80s music and aesthetics.  Several changes were made to the original storyline, with the Shadow Warriors gang now being led by a lich known as Skullmadeggon.  There is a dedicated Run and Evade button, allowing for greater defensive positioning.  The game received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising the game’s polish, theme, and music.  It was released digitally for the Xbox 360 and PS3 initially.

January 2017

In Double Dragon IV, Billy and Jimmy Lee work to spread their martial arts all across the country.  However, they face a new threat from a gang known as the Renegades, who are working with the Black Warriors, who seek revenge on the Lee brothers.  This entry was developed and published by Arc System Works with series creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto at the helm.  The game received unfavorable reviews, with most reviewers approving of the aesthetics but criticizing the controls and difficulty.

August 2020

After a long hiatus, a reboot for the series was developed by Dlala Studios.  Battletoads features gameplay that harkens back to the original title with humorous side-scrolling, beat ‘em up action.  Also featured are racing, shoot ‘em up, and puzzle challenges along the way.  After being locked up for 26 years, the Battletoads are now in the modern day looking to retake their long-lost fame and admiration.  They find the Dark Queen now powerless and in the same position they are.  They team up to defeat the Topians who had sealed them away to begin with.  It received mixed to positive reviews, with wide praise for the graphics and presentation, and conflicting opinions regarding the difficulty.

July 2023

Developed by Secret Base, Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is set before the first title.  Here, New York City is controlled by gangs, and Marian has been injured during the ongoing conflict.  The mayor requests that the Lee brothers, Marian, and Uncle Matin fight against the gangs.  The gangs can be defeated in any order, but doing so will cause the remaining gangs to get stronger.  An expansion was also released, titled The Sacred Reunion, which adds three additional characters: Chin Sei Mei, Yagyu Ranzou from The Rosetta Stone, and Sonny Lee from The Sacred Stones.
