This classic shoot 'em up makes its Western debut after 34 years!

Released in 1989 in Japan on the MSX/MSX2+, Undeadline is a unique vertical shooter that was a new type of game for T&E Soft.  It invoked tropes from classic horror and medieval fantasy, and it pushed their developers to create an unforgettable challenge.  Ports to the MSX consoles and Mega Drive followed in 1991, with a very limited distribution.  Since then, it has been extremely difficult to obtain that.  It comes with an uncompromising challenge for even the most seasoned shoot 'em up players.  For the first time, we are proud to release it to the West for everyone’s game collection!

1982

T&E Soft Co. Ltd. was founded by brothers Toshiro and Eiji Yokoyama and began selling games and accessories for the home PC market in Japan.  Eventually, their small development team would create Hydlide, which would become their breakout hit.  As the videogame industry grew, they shifted their focus from PC software to home consoles.

July 1989

Undeadline was released on the MSX/MSX2+ in Japan and garnered attention from reviewers for its unique gameplay elements and difficulty.  A port for the X68000 PC arrived in September 1990, which would allow players to choose between a fighter, a rogue, or a mage as their characters and expanded some of the environments.

December 1991

The Mega Drive port would launch in Japan only with very limited distribution.  This version of Undeadline removed the Rogue and Mage characters. The story was also changed to reflect the character changes.  Although it was one of the toughest shooters available on the console, it did not get a release outside of Japan.

2020

The MSX and X68000 versions of Undeadline were re-released through BEEP, a gaming store chain known for publishing games in Japan.  These versions had new box art created.  These versions have since gone on to command high prices on the market, while the original versions kept skyrocketing in value.

2025

Retro-Bit Publishing will be re-releasing Undeadline on the SEGA Genesis®/Mega Drive in North America and Europe for the first time.  This version has been completely translated into English for the first time.  The game is expected to arrive by late 2025.

  • The licensing has been updated to reflect this release.
  • All of the text has been updated to English for the first time without impacting the gameplay.
