SAVE THE WORLD IN THIS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SHOOTER!

Over 30 years ago, Gaiares was released for the SEGA Genesis® and Mega Drive consoles and it pushed the limit of what a console shooter could do.  With over 10 minutes of anime-inspired cutscenes, a dynamic weapon system, massive bosses, and impressive graphics all crammed onto an 8 Mb cartridge.  In this re-release, we've paid homage to its original release while also having the opportunity to speak to former playtester at Renovation Products, James Bunker, who was featured in various ads for the game!  Additionally, Retro-Bit will make a donation per purchase to the Video Game History Foundation in our mutual efforts for game preservation.

In Gaiares, Mother Earth has been turned into an environmental wasteland.  Now, the human race has one final chance to save the Earth...with your help!  The United Star Cluster of Leezaluth will help the humans settle a new world if they are able to take out the intergalactic terrorists known as Gulfer.  Fail, and they will force our sun to supernova - destroying the entire system.  But there is still one brave hero willing to fight for our survival - ace pilot Dan Dare.  Along with Alexis, the former messenger of Leezaluth, and the new TOZ weapon system… we have a chance!  Journey through 8 stages of brutal space combat, enormous bosses, and gorgeous cutscenes all on a 16-bit cartridge!

Originally developed under the title Aztion (アズシオン), Gaiares (which was a combination of "Gaia", a.k.a. Earth, and "less", being that humans would be planet-less if they lost) launched in Japan.  The initial reception was positive with reviewers impressed by its graphics but stung by its increasing difficulty.

The North American SEGA Genesis® would finally get a crack at Gaiares with a few tweaks.  Many characters would get renamed and even the weapon arsenal system changed from WOZ to TOZ.  Over at the US offices of Renovation, Jamie Bunker was recruited by the marketing team to become the face of an advertising campaign, describing him as a "professional gamer" when he was mainly an in-house playtester.  The game did not release in Europe originally.

June 2022

Retro-Bit Publishing released its first collaboration with Edia to success with Gaiares.  The team contacted James Bunker who has since had a long career in aerospace but was more than happy to share some nuggets about his time at Renovation and growing up a gamer.  Pre-orders had closed in late 2021.
